As mobile devices like the iPad are becoming increasingly popular, laptop makers are working hard to be more innovative to compete with the new more portable devices.
Once upon a time, the 10 kg laptop was viewed as the small and portable option to the desktop PC. Its introduction revolutionised how we thought about the office - no longer were we chained to the desk, but we could take our work around with us and work from home.
Tablet Android Wifi
Of course, today most laptops are considered much too clunky for mobile use and have largely been replaced by mobile phones and tablet devices. Some users now prefer to have a more powerful PC to tackle memory intensive programs like image or video editing and will invest in a smart phone or tablet as their more "portable option". So where does this leave the laptops?
The future of laptops
The big laptop makers are all gearing up to launch new laptop ranges and models to stay competitive in the technology space.
- Latest Intel cores - Intel has created a number of second generation processors that offer lightning fast speeds to tackle some of the biggest computing tasks. A number of laptop brands, including Asus, LeNovo, Acer and Toshiba include models that feature the CORE i3, i5 and i7 processors to suit a range of business and home computing needs.
- Tougher bodies - while mobile tablets are coming out with a slim and sleek look, some laptops makers are moving in the other direction to create sturdy and durable machines. Panasonic's line of rugged laptops, the Toughbook, is said to be built to withstand drops of up to 6 feet as well as all kinds of spills, dust and grime so you can take your machine to some of the harshest environments if you so desired.
- Detachable touchpads - some makers are looking for new angles and uses for their laptop components. For example, Acer's newest notebook features a detachable Touchpad that doubles as a remote control for the unit. A nifty device for delivering presentations from meetings.
Meanwhile, there are also a number of innovations in operating systems and software. For example, users with multiple devices can now sync their files over a shared WiFi network instead of needing to use a USB drive or sending files through email.
If you're looking to buy or rent a laptop, there are a number of new options and models to consider. While tablets have become the hot new technology accessory, there's so much on offer for both home and business use when it comes to the latest laptops around.
